Sony released detailed specifications for the PS5 console early this morning, with the main processor, like Microsoft’s XSX, customized for AMD, with the 8-core Zen2 and the GPU’s RDNA2. The main differencebetween between the two sides is the frequency and GPU core number, Microsoft XSX CPU frequency of up to 3.8GHz, 300MHz higher than the PS5 3.5GHz. On the GPU, xSX is 52 sets of CU units, 1.825GHz, while PS5 is 36 sets of CU units and 2.23GHz.
As can be seen, Microsoft’s GPU is strong in the core number, low frequency (relatively speaking), Sony is going the other way, cu units are few, but high frequency, which will reduce costs.
Microsoft’s hardware performance failure in the Xbox X vs. PS4 was radical this time, but Sony was conservative, but that’s not our focus, the key is the Sony PS5’s 2.23GHz.
The PS5’s 36 sets of CU units are equivalent to 2304 stream processors, which is actually the size of the RX 5700 XT graphics card, but the 2.23GHz frequency is at least 200MHz higher than the current RX 5700 XT, which means that the frequency is at least 10% higher.
In fact, the two are incomparable, because the PS5 is rDNA2 architecture, 7nm plus process, RX 5700 XT or RDNA architecture, 7nm process.
Having said that, what’s the point? That is, the GPU frequency of the PS5, AMD’s next-generation RX 6000 series graphics card frequency will easily exceed 2GHz, after all, the current acceleration frequency is also close to 2GHz.
According to AMD’s financial analyst conference earlier this month, AMD will focus on optimization at the micro-architecture level, and with the changes from Zen to Zen 2, RDNA 2 will improve in terms of IPC, circuit design, and clock frequency.
Compared to RDNA, RDNA2 is 50% more energy efficient than RDNA, which is significantly more than TSMC’s 7nm plus process performance and energy efficiency gains.
If you consider that the host processor is more conservative in frequency than the graphics card due to space constraints, then the desktop graphics potential of the RDNA2 architecture is greater.
All in all, after Sony announced the GPU frequency of the PS5, A rice is definitely a shock. The frequency of the next generation AMD graphics card can easily start from 1.8GHz, 2.2GHz acceleration frequency is normal, more intense speculation is still looking forward to the acceleration frequency 2.4-2.5GHz, technology should be able to do, just see how AMD weighs CU units, frequency and power consumption.
