Google had previously promised to remove ads for medical masks, but U.S. lawmakers were unhappy that users found that ads still appeared next to the content, which was linked to the new virus. On Tuesday, two U.S. senators wrote to the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission criticizing Google for continuing to place ads next to the new viral content.
Federal health officials have repeatedly told the public not to snap up medical masks and to leave them to those in need, such as health care workers.
Google told CNBC last week that it would temporarily ban advertising for medical masks, but it would take several days to remove them. A few days ago, Facebook took a similar approach.
