New York Attorney General Letitia James has asked Craigslist to remove posts that try to profit illegally from consumers’ fears about the new virus, media reported. James noted that she also called on companies to ensure policies that would stop these scammers from doing so.
“I will not hesitate to take action against those who see this crisis as a plan to get rich quickly,” James wrote on Twitter on Friday. Here she is referring to the high price of hand sanitizer, and some users trying to sell test kits or counterfeit products that claim to be immune to the virus.
Craigslist did not immediately respond to a request for comment in response to the attorney general’s request.
In fact, Craiglist wasn’t the only online marketer that needed to deal with price fraud or false health claims during the new corona virus pandemic. eBay has banned people from selling masks and hand sanitizer on its platforms, and the e-commerce company will also remove products that mention viruscorona (corona virus) and COVID-19 (new coronavirus). Earlier this month, Amazon dropped 1 million products that claimed to cure the disease and thousands of products involved in price fraud.
