According to real-time statistics released by Johns Hopkins University in the United States, as of 11 a.m. Beijing time on March 21, the number of new cases of coronary pneumonia exceeded 275,000. The new corona epidemic is spreading globally, with most countries reporting new and cumulative cases on a daily basis, and statistics and distribution are largely the responsibility of government departments. The following are the departments or officials responsible for the release of the new coronary pneumonia data in some countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
U.S.: Hopkins University/Media, Agency Calculates Through State Outbreak Data
Brazil: Ministry of Health
France: Jerome Salomon, Director-General of Health, Ministry of Health
Italy: Head of Civil Protection, Commissioner of the New Coronavirus Emergency Committee
Germany: Robert Koch Institute, CDC
Spain: Ministry of Health
Korea: Department of Disease Management
Japan: Ministry of Health, Labour and Local Self-Government Groups
South Africa: Ministry of Health
In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are not tasked with releasing authoritative data on new cases of coronary pneumonia nationwide. At present, including the U.S. domestic media, including the multi-national media in the United States, mostly cited the U.S. Hopkins University website published real-time data. What’s the reason?
U.S. DISEASE Control: Weekend breaks based on state data
The CDC website said in a March 3 release that it would stop publishing data on the number of tests, citing the fact that the data are not representative of the national data as the number of tests increases in each state. American netizens have been talking about it, and there are some disgruntled voices.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been counting cases and deaths since January 21, though data updates are lagging behind. On March 10, local time, for example, the New York Times, which has built its own database of new coronary pneumonia since January, reported that the number of new coronary pneumonia cases in the United States had exceeded 1,000. On the same day, CNN, CBS and other U.S. media by self-calculation of state data or reference to Hopkins data, have reported the case broke thousands of news. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data released on the 10th, the cumulative number of cases in the United States is 647.

The new Coronary Pneumonia Outbreak page on the CDC’s website is updated regularly from noon Monday to Friday, showing the data as of 4 p.m. the previous day. There are also text notes: There are differences in cases reported by the CDC and state and local public health departments, with state-reported cases being the latest.
In other words, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopped publishing case data for two days over the weekend, withno guarantees that the data will be up-to-date.
Then look at the U.S. Department of Public Health and Services, which describes its role as protecting the health of all Americans, providing effective health services, and promoting advances in medicine, public health, and social services. At present, the site’s home page is prominently displayed on the new corona virus’s feature page, but after clicking, jump directly to the CDC website.

Why is Hopkins data favored?
Reporters combed found that in the U.S. media, the New York Times set up a database to self-count the new coronary pneumonia data, CNN based on the U.S. state and local data compiled. Media outlets such as The Associated Press, USA Today, Capitol Hill, and CBS all refer to real-time data released by Hopkins University.
Hopkins University is a research private university with a main campus in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and the first research university in the United States. On January 22nd, the school’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering produced a “Global Map of the Spread of The New Coronary Virus” from the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Worldometers.info website, the BNO News Agency, and governments and health authorities to visualize the outbreak to the public.

According to the Hopkins Outbreak Map page, from January 22 to 31, Hopkins University’s data collection was done entirely manually, and was published separately every morning and evening. As the outbreak progressed, manual updates were unsustainable, and semi-automated real-time data streams were introduced from February 1.
On the outbreak map, branch data can be viewed from country to country, for example, data from China can be broken down into each province, data from the United States can be broken down into each state, and most other countries can show cumulative cases, deaths, and cured cases across the country.
Why is Hopkins’s data more popular with so many institutions and websites that count new crown cases worldwide?
The “Look at the World by Data” website, created by Oxford University, explains that when they monitored new coronary outbreak data in countries around the world, they initially looked at three data sources: WHO, the European Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) and Hopkins University. They have now given up on obtaining data from WHO, partly because the WHO revised its daily statistical deadline on 18 March and partly because of errors in its database.

The Data World study showed that WHO, CDC and Hopkins data were almost identical in terms of initial case statistics in the United States, and that since March 10, Hopkins’ data were significantly higher than the other two because they took into account estimates of “presumed positive cases.” This data refers to cases confirmed by state or local laboratories, but not confirmed by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC has made it clear that state case reports are up-to-date. As a result, Hopkins data updates are relatively timely.
How did the CDC perform in the outbreak?
Since the outbreak of the new crown in the United States, how many people can get tested has been the focus of public and media questions in the United States. The New York Times once issued a “soul torture” in its report: “How can the world’s most medically advanced country struggle to diagnose a new coronavirus infection?” Why can’t more Americans get tested earlier? How many Americans are carrying the new coronavirus now? “
The Capitol Hill newspaper noted that CDC and Health Department officials have repeatedly released conflicting messages that prevent people from learning about the real outbreak. “It’s a failure, let’s admit it,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said at the March 12 hearing. “
In the early hours of March 13, Mr. Trump tweeted that he “bombarded” the CDC: “For decades, the CDC has been reviewing and studying its testing system, but doing nothing. In the face of a pandemic, it has been under-reacted and slow. They even hope that a global pandemic will never happen. President Obama has made some changes before, but only to make things more complicated. “
Trump also took to Twitter to cite the H1N1 flu outbreak as an example, calling the CDC’s response to the H1N1 flu “a massive disaster that has killed thousands of people and has not yet been tested.” “
Republican lawmakers believe the CDC’s response to the new corona outbreak is largely due to the Trump administration’s deep cuts to the agency’s budget, the Washington Times reported. The CDC’s budget was cut by $1.2 billion in the 2021 draft, released by the White House on February 10.
Forbes magazine notes that the U.S. has no qualms about military spending, reaching $738 billion in 2020, up about 2.8 percent from the previous fiscal year. By contrast, there is far less investment in health, including in the CDC and its agencies.
Earlier in March, Mr. Trump had signed an $8.3 billion bill to help agencies such as the CENTERs for Disease Control and Prevention respond to the outbreak and support vaccine development and the distribution of medical supplies.
