A new small-scale study by Chinese researchers shows that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine is actually no more effective than standard, conventional new crown treatments.
The study included 30 patients who did not receive any treatment (15 in the control group) and the other half were treated with hydroxychloroquine. The study showed no statistically significant difference in the number of patients who were negative after one week. During the study, patients receiving routine treatment received antiviral drugs currently recommended for use in China, including epinavir/litonavir. A week later, 13 of the 15 control patients showed no signs of the virus, while 14 of the 15 patients treated with hydroxychloroquine showed the same results.
An earlier small study of 30 patients conducted by French researchers last week showed that the use of hydroxychloroquine alone can effectively reduce the duration and severity of COVID-19, while combining it with the antibiotic azithromycin can improve its effectiveness. The study was criticized for its methods.
