In addition to protective masks, Microsoft’s first purchases of 15,000 pairs of goggles, 850 medical caps, 850 protective suits and 120 infrared thermometers arrived in the United States on Monday.
Microsoft expects 15,000 pairs of goggles, 35,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and 2,000 boxes of disinfectant swabs to arrive in the U.S. on Friday. The medical supplies will be delivered to the Microsoft warehouse in Redmond, to the State of Washington’s enterprise services department and to the areas where it is most needed.
Microsoft, which employs 140,000 people, does not produce medical supplies, but has a vast global supply chain that can buy things that most companies can’t.
As of Tuesday, Microsoft had spent about $4 million on much-needed medical supplies. Washington state is getting 1.6 million N95 masks from its national reserves, and Microsoft plans to import 500,000 if needed.
Smith said the company has a small amount of medical masks and emergency supplies in its facilities around the world in case of an earthquake or other disaster. More of this material is in reserve at its main campus in Redmond.
“But we certainly never bought that much, ” he added.
