Eating cannabis or other foods containing the psychoactive compound THC may have a significant impact on a woman’s fertility, according to a newly published study. The study, presented at the ENDO 2020 meeting, suggests that women who eat THC may have difficulty getting pregnant, the Endocrine Society reported Thursday.

Marijuana is a traditional drug made from cannabis plants and can also be considered a drug in a country where medically legalized, and is made from the use of flowers and hairy bodies of female cannabis. Marijuana is relatively easy to grow and process, has become the most popular and cheapest drug in western countries today, known as “the drug of the poor”.
Currently cannabis contains a variety of compounds, the two largest of which are THC and CBD. CBD does not have any psychoactive action, and THC is a plant-related “high” compound. This same compound may affect a woman’s fertility.
The new study, conducted primarily by exposing cow eggs to different levels of THC, eventually found that the more exposure, the greater the difficulty of the embryo reaching different “critical stages of development.”
Egg changes associated with THC exposure suggest impaired embryo development, making it less likely to survive, the researchers said. The results suggest that women who regularly consume THC products, especially those with high doses of THC, may therefore be at risk of infertility. Women wishing to become pregnant and women seeking fertility treatment are advised to avoid THC products.
