Google’s Messages messaging apps (SMS, MMS, RCS) are rich in features, including built-in tagging tools, reminders, context-aware recommendations, dark mode, RCS support, and web interfaces. Most of these features are not available in other SMS apps, especially the sMS apps that vendors pre-install on their phones, which makes Messages particularly popular.
Data on the Google Play Store today shows that Google Messages has just been downloaded more than 1 billion times, and half of that install was achieved in less than a year.
The app is not part of GMS ( Google Mobile Services), which means most vendors come with their own SMS app when they ship, not the app. Only the Pixel and Android One phones pre-install Google’s Messages app. Such a high download volume means that quite a few people choose to use it instead of the default SMS software.
If you’re not one of the 1 billion people, it’s recommended that you download it using the link below and probably not go back to your phone maker’s messaging solution.
