Northwestern University has unveiled a new wearable device for monitoring symptoms of patients with the new coronavirus, which looks like a large switch or a small bandage on the skin,media reported. It is designed to work with data algorithms that allow it to detect new coronavirus symptoms for patients and health care providers — including after they are discharged from the hospital.

The wearable device, developed by researchers at Northwestern University and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, is designed to monitor patients with the new coronavirus and thus help doctors identify early symptoms of respiratory disease while enabling round-the-clock data collection, according to a statement from the agency.

As shown above, the wearable device is designed to be placed at the bottom of the patient’s neck, where it monitors the wearer’s breathing activity and cough. The researchers explain that their wearables analyze the data in ways that traditional medical devices can’t do. They also described it as filling in critical data gaps.

Although the wearable device has been used in patients, the method is very limited.

About 25 patients with the new coronavirus started using the device two weeks ago, Northwestern University said. Together, they produced more than 1,500 hours of surveillance and more than 1TB of data. This usage has been used in clinics and homes. It is unclear where these wearables will be used in the future.
