5G mobile phones have become a new trend. According to the “March 2020 Domestic Mobile Phone Market Operation Analysis Report” issued by the China Xintong Institute, 14.06 million 5G mobile phones were shipped from January to March 2020. And the number of new 5G phones on the market in January-March is nearly twice that of 4G new ones. However, most of the 5G phones currently on the market are equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G processors, so both MediaTek and Huawei are actively launching 5G SoCs.
This week, MediaTek launched the upgraded Dimensity 1000 plus, 5G connection, screen refresh rate, game engine, picture quality engine, and iQOO will launch the Dimensity 1000 plus, based on its flagship processor, Dimensity 1000.
So far, the Dimensity 1000 series is available in three versions, Dimensity 1000L, Dimensity 1000 plus, why would MediaTek do this?
Half a year later, dimensity 1000 is upgraded
Dimensity 1000 is MediaTek’s first flagship 5G mobile platform, released in November 2019, manufactured using a 7nm process, integrated dual-mode 5G modem, a large and small core design, 4 Arm’s latest CPU core Cortex-A77 main frequency of 2.6GHz, and 4 Cortex-A55 main frequency 2.0GHz. The GPU is also Arm’s latest Mali-G77. It also features a stand-alone AI processor, APU3.0, support for the latest Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 plus standards.

Six months later, on May 7, 2020, the release of the upgraded Dimensity 1000 Plus has been upgraded in four major areas: platform capability, festival technology, game technology, and display technology.

In addition to supporting 5G, one of the biggest selling points of this year’s new phones is support for 120Hz screen refresh rates. The Dimensity 1000 has a good performance in the 120-frame game thanks to the upgraded HyperEngine 2.0. The Dimensity 1000 Plus directly supports the industry’s highest screen refresh rate of 144Hz, presenting 2.4 times as much per second as a normal 60Hz screen.

There are also new picture quality engines for display-related upgrades. The Dimensity 1000 Plus features MediaTek’s exclusive image display technology, and the new MiraVision picture quality engine upgrades video quality from the hardware and software layer to three areas:
AI Scene Quality Optimization (AI-PQ): Combined with APU3.0’s powerful AI computing power and MiraVision’s chip-level independent hardware, the contrast, sharpness and color of each frame of the frame can be dynamically adjusted according to AI scene recognition for frame-by-frame quality tuning of 4K video in real time.
Beyond HDR10 Plus: By optimizing the dynamic range and image detail of the video picture by frame-by-frame optimization, the native 4K HDR10 plus video quality is more vivid and realistic, the color rendering is more delicate, and the picture level is richer.

In addition, the Dimensity 1000 Plus is also equipped with hyperEngine 2.0 game optimization engine, in the game smoothness and low power consumption, continuous incoming calls, delay, Bluetooth transmission and other aspects of optimization.
Although the Dimensity 1000 Plus is an upgrade to the Dimensity 1000, MediaTek does not give a quantitative improvement in the Dimensity 1000 CPU, GPU, and 5G performance compared to the 144Hz screen refresh rate, but is more an experience-oriented introduction.
Why are there three versions of the Dimensity 1000?
For example, the call shown at the launch is constantly online. Based on HyperEngine 2.0, users can play without being affected by incoming calls during the game. In addition, in apps like WeChat, video calls are not interrupted suddenly because of a call-in video call.
Also, HyperEngine 2.0, highlighted in the launch, is optimized specifically for Bluetooth transmission, allowing Bluetooth response to sense the zero sense time difference. At a time when Bluetooth wireless headsets are becoming more popular, this is also an important experience upgrade for gamers.
It’s worth noting that, together with the newly released Dimensity 1000 Plus, the Dimensity 1000 series already has three versions, and the other two versions are the Dimensity 1000 and the Dimensity 1000L (if officially released, only the Dimensity 1000 and Dimensity 1000 plus versions).
Dimensity 1000 has been introduced, the Dimensity 1000L is not actually specifically released, but appeared on the first mobile OPPO Reno3 with the Dimensity 1000 series SoC.
According to media reports, the Dimensity 1000L’s large nuclear main frequency has been reduced from 2.6GHz to 2.4GHz from the Dimensity 1000, and the core number of GPUs (MultiCore) has changed from the MC9 of the Dimensity 1000 to the MC7, while the main frequency speed has also decreased. Obviously, here’s the L that means Lite.
In other words, Dimensity 1000L is MediaTek and mobile phone OEMs in cooperation with the customer’s needs of the hardware and software adjustment, CPU frequency adjustment is more in the software level, relatively flexible.
With the release of the Dimensity 1000 Plus, MediaTek has also divided three versions of the flagship 5G SoC, which are not very different, but are better able to meet the differentiated needs of mobile OEM, which is increasingly competitive in the mobile phone market, can reflect value.
Of course, we can also understand this approach from another perspective. The 7nm process is expensive, after Huawei said the 7nm Kirin 980 cost more than $300m. Kirin 990, which uses TSMC’s second generation 7nm process, costs up to $200 million per test.
MediaTek, which is more cost-effective, is less enthusiastic about state-of-the-art semiconductor processes than Huawei and Apple. But in order to gain an advantage in the 5G competition, MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 opted for a costly 7nm process.
That being the case, dimensity 1000 must be heavily adopted by its customers to be successful at the strategy and product levels. At this time, based on the Dimensity 1000, the Dimensity 1000L is available according to customer needs, and the flagship configuration is upgraded to meet the higher-end demand to launch the Dimensity 1000 Plus, which is understandable in three versions of the Dimensity 1000 series.
Behind the upgrade of the flagship processor is the increasingcompetition of 5G
In fact, Qualcomm’ approach to the flagship processor performance re-upgrade also happened last year. Last July, Qualcomm abruptly released the SnapDragon855 Plus, Qualcomm’s flagship SoC, launched in December 2018, in a press release aimed at better meeting demand in the mobile phone market in the second half of 2019.
As a result, MediaTek is also easier to understand when it launches its flagship Dimensity 1000 5G SoC six months after launching a fully upgraded Dimensity 1000 Plus. Dimensity 1000, Dimensity 1000L, Dimensity 1000 plus three versions of the flagship mobile platform, more to illustrate the current mobile phone SoC competition has taken another step, in order to be able to maintain the flagship level, better meet market demand, Media and Qualcomm mobile phone SoC providers, also need to be more flexible ways to increase the frequency of flagship processor updates.
This is a reflection of the more competitive 5G processors. For MediaTek, improving performance and meeting the latest needs of mobile oEMs in this way, maintaining the flagship 5G processor level also determines whether MediaTek’s product position continues to improve.
