Huawei Kirin 710A Commercial Production: Made by SMIC , 14nm Processby

On May 9th Mr Fang traded his newly purchased Huawei P40 in exchange for a low-end machine, the Glorious Play 4T. Fang Jin did so only because of  this mobile chip, made by SMIC, the process used 14nm process. It can be said that this mobile chip “Kirin 710A”, to achieve a breakthrough of zero localization, is China’s semiconductor chip technology ice-breaking action

“Science and Technology Daily” reporter learned from SMIC, May 9, SMIC Shanghai, everyone getting a honor Play4T, which is different from the Huawei Mall online sales of the same phone – the logo – SMIC 20 and a line of specially stated text: Powered by SMIC FinFET.

Huawei Kirin 710A Commercial Production: SMIC International Contract, 14nm Process

This is an integrated terminal for SMIC’s 20th anniversary chip technology.

Earlier, huawei launched the Kirin 710A entry-level mobile phone mobile chip, contracted by SMIC International, the process of 14nm. But neither Huawei nor SMIC has responded to or acknowledged the rumours.

On May 9th, SMIC employees and industry insiders obtained this mobile terminal, indicating that SMIC 14nm FinFET inside mobile chip, finally achieved large-scale mass production and commercialization.

Previously, Huawei mobile phone devices were designed by Hisilicon, which was then manufactured by TSMC.

On May 16 last year, the United States launched a technology ban against Huawei, TSMC is particularly the key link the United States wants to “conquer” .

Since 2020, there have been rumours that the U.S. ban on Huawei’s technology is likely to escalate again: it will revise export control rules to reduce the proportion of semiconductor component suppliers’ applications from U.S. technology to 10 percent, while TSMC’s 14nm production line uses more than 10 percent of the technology from the U.S.

Once the new U.S. export control rules take effect, TSMC will no longer be able to manufacture Hisilicon’s contract chips, and Huawei’s terminals will face huge obstacles.

“If that’s the case, Huawei HiSilicon will lose its footing and no longer be able to provide any chips, ” a chip research and development engineer, who asked not to be named, told The Science daily. “

Previous rumors about the chips used in the phone have been interpreted by the industry in response to a US technology ban. In the field of low-end terminal chips, it seems that domestic substitution has indeed been achieved.

A reporter for The Science Daily noted that the first chip in the Kirin 7 series was the Kirin 710, which was launched by Huawei in July 2018 on the Nova 3i mobile phone, which was installed by TSMC, with a process of 12nm, a main frequency of 2.2GHz and eight cores.

Honor Play4T equipped with pure domestic mobile chip Kirin 710A, SMIC International contract, 14nm process, main frequency 2.0GHz, belongs to the Kirin 710 down-frequency version.

If only look at performance, Kirin 710 is undoubtedly not the current mainstream, process backward, the main frequency is also low, CPU running score of only 60948 points, more than 9% of users.

But its significance is extraordinary, from chip design, contract to packaging testing link, all to achieve localization, with completely domestic intellectual property rights.

“It’s a breakthrough from 0 to 1. “A chip engineer at a domestic chip technology giant told The Science daily.

Late on the night of May 9, a group of semiconductor industry people gathered around SMIC employees and asked, “Where can I buy the SMIC 20th Anniversary Collection (Honor Play4T)?” “

Just like Fang Jin, this group of people who have always been at the forefront of mobile terminal technology, in order to this low-end machine, willing to pay, not just a new mainstream flagship terminal.
