After following in the Windows 10 October update (Version 1809), Microsoft slowed down the pace of Windows 10 feature updates, focusing on BUG fixes and background optimization in last year’s release of November 2019. And as last year, the Windows 10 Version 2009 feature update, which went live this fall, has been confirmed to be a minor update.
Last year’s Windows 10 November 2019 update basically followed the May 2019 feature update, which has a version number of Build 18363 and the latter version number Build 18362, both of which share feature updates.
This year’s Windows 10 Version 2009 also adopts the same update strategy, with the upcoming May 2020 feature update number Build 19041 and Version 2009 number Build 19042.
In the latest Build 19041.264 preview update, it has been listed as Windows 10 20H2 in the registry entry. In addition, this version includes an “enablement package” that enables Version 2004 to be version 2009.
Windows 10 Version 2004 and Version 2009 will share the same system files, and the new features of Version 2009 (20H2) will be included in version 2004 monthly updates, but the features will be in a “sleep/disabled state.” Version 2009’s Windows 10 features are built on Windows 10 Version 2004, but they are set to Disabled before you install the enablepack.
In September or October, Microsoft will release a quick-installed Master Switch that will activate the enable pack to enable Windows 10 Verison 2009. The company will use “service technology” to deliver the 20H2 update, which will minimize the possible disruption caused by the feature update.
The Windows 10 20H2 feature update is similar to the Windows 10 November 2019 feature update, and does not have a significant update, including general fixes, background performance tuning, and feature optimization. Based on recent version updates received by Windows Insider users, Windows 10 20H2 is expected to get the following features
When an application uses your location information, an update icon appears on the taskbar.
The Details tab in Task Manager now shows the schema of each process. You can now right-click on the column title, select the column, and then add the device schema from the list.
With this new tab, you can now find out the architecture of each process running on the system (x86, x86, arm64).
New 2-in-1 PC experience
With the launch of Windows 10 20H2, Microsoft says it will launch a new tablet experience for 2-in-1 convertible PCs. In the new tablet mode, the taskbar icon is switched off and the search box is converted to an icon. At the same time, the touch keyboard can be exhaled when the user taps the text field.
The default app experience
Currently in the Settings app, Windows 10 allows users to change the default app for browsers or other features.
In the upcoming update, Microsoft will add the ability to search for file types, protocols, and app lists. This change will make it easier for you to set the default app.
Windows Subsystem for Linux
Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10’s File Manager will soon support the Linux file system. In the 20H2 update, you will have easier access to Linux files in File Explorer.
Microsoft says that after the user installs and enables WSL, they will see Tux (Linux icon) in the left navigation pane of File Explorer.
Clean up recommendations in storage settings
The storage settings are updated in 20H2 to show the cleanup recommendations. All your most recent files, large folders, files, and content will be gathered on one page, and you can delete them with just a few clicks.
Microsoft says Windows 10 can’t predict whether you’re deleting a particular file, but it arranges the content so you can easily identify the files you don’t need and delete them.
Windows Search Index
Microsoft says Windows Search is able to perform the index of files in less time, and promises that when you actively use the machine, it will not index your files in large numbers. This may cause your system to perform faster.
More modern volume control
This new feature provides granular multimedia control, allowing users to control a music when using global media controls, and is currently testing multiple running interfaces, including multimedia controls under the lock screen.
