According tomedia BGR, one of the confusing aspects of the new corona virus pandemic is that many people quickly embrace the nonsense conspiracy theories about the virus and, in turn, spread false information. Just last week, for example, a new coronavirus conspiracy theory called “Plandemic” went viral online and racked up millions of views. In such special times, it is worth listening to the opinions of reputable scientists, rather than embracing far-fetched theories that are often based on fragile evidence. Given this, virus expert Dr. Nevan Krogan took to Reddit earlier Monday to pay particular attention to an AMA.
Dr. Krogan, who works in a lab at the University of California, San Francisco, has been leading a team working on effective new coronavirus treatments. Krogan’s AMA is short, but informative, and some of his answers are worth sharing.
For example, one netizen asked if effective new coronavirus treatments could bring people back to the pre-epidemic lifestyle. While it is clear that a vaccine would be an ideal solution, it is not known when or whether the new coronavirus vaccine will be developed and ready to be rolled out to the public.
‘In the best case, we might reuse existing drugs into a temporary combination of drugs that will significantly hinder the physical damage caused by the new coronavirus,’ Krogan later explained. Optimistically, Krogan expects a reliable and effective new coronavirus treatment to hit the market by 2021.
We haven’t developed a vaccine for a lot of diseases, and that’s why we’re looking for drugs or compounds, and that’s the way we’re taking them…. So, I think in the short term, through drug reuse, come up with a drug or a compound that already exists — that’s our strategy. Try to understand the biology of viruses, then find ready-made drugs and reuse them to fight this particular epidemic.
In effect, it is not very effective, however, one of the goals is to come up with a combination strategy. That’s the cure for AIDS, isn’t it? A combination of three drugs, perhaps one of the drugs we found, or someone else found…
Typically, it takes a long time to get a cure for the disease. But in the history of science, there have never been so many scientists who have focused on one issue like this. I really believe that by the end of 2020, there will be a combination of drugs to be used, and this may succeed…… In the end, there may be a drug or combination of drugs for those who are just getting infected, or those who are relying on a ventilator, and those who are experiencing a cytokine storm. The more we learn about the virus, the more insights we have about treatment….
