Animal Place, an animal protection group that abandoned farms in the United States, was informed of the news and consulted urgently with chicken farmers, who agreed to send two charter flights over the weekend to transport about 1,000 “lucky chickens” to an animal shelter in California.

The new crown outbreak has severely affected the U.S. food supply chain, shutting down meat processing plants and preventing farmers from selling their products. Last month, 2 million chickens were euthanized at several farms in Delaware and Maryland because of a lack of staff at chicken processing plants.

Animal Place chartered two private jets on Saturday to transport the “lucky chickens”, at a cost of which was provided by a donor. Two staff members at the California Animal Shelter drove nearly 30 hours to a farm in Iowa to oversee rescue efforts.

According to the organization, the animals now live in California’s Grass Valley, one of the oldest and largest animal sanctuaries in the state. The hens will be healthy and available to families across the state in backyards. Any rescued hen who is too ill to be adopted will remain in a shelter and receive lifelong care.
