Microsoft builds new supercomputing with more than 285,000 CPU cores and 10,000 GPUs

Last year, Microsoft announced a major partnership with OpenAI, including a $1 billion investment. OpenAI and Microsoft’s plan is to build a computing platform in Azure that can train and run advanced AI models. Microsoft will make improvements to Azure to build supercomputing technology, which will also be available to ordinary AI developers. Microsoft announced the results of the partnership at the Build 2020 event. Microsoft partnered with OpenAI to build a new supercomputer on Azure.

The new supercomputer, developed for OpenAI, includes more than 285,000 CPU cores, 10,000 GPUs, and a network connection capacity of 400 gigabits per second per GPU server. Microsoft’s new supercomputer, top ping,net, is in the top five, according to the world’s top supercomputer, TOP500.

Microsoft says OpenAI’s goal is not just to pursue research breakthroughs, but to design and develop powerful AI technologies that others can use. By developing this leading infrastructure to train large AI models, Microsoft is making all of its Azure services better. Microsoft’s CTO Kevin Scott says Microsoft is building better computers, better distributed systems, better networks, and better data centers that make the entire Azure cloud better with performance, cost and flexibility.
