Following previous patents for tinning or opaque windows, Apple is now looking at adding additional layers to the window glass to achieve such windows. Apple has recently been granted several patents for the Titan project, including one called the Adjustable Window System, which it says can be used in “vehicles and buildings,” according tomedia.
In addition to stating that it is “very suitable for vehicles and buildings with windows”, the patent document states that windows may be fitted with a matte surface or mirror coating to enhance privacy. Apple says adding such matte or mirror coatings to windows can be challenging. “If you’re not careful, the window may become too reflective, may not be transparent enough to see things through the window, or it may lead to other bad properties.” “
While the patent states that such a feature would be the same as for a car or office building, it states that the car should not be equipped with windows of a permanent scrub or permanent reflective nature, unless it is intended to prevent the driver and passenger from looking out of the vehicle. If you want to keep privacy, you need a window that can be adjusted.
“Systems such as cars may have adjustable structures, and the control circuits in the vehicle can adjust the windows based on user input and sensor inputs,” the patent filing states. “
Most of the patent focuses on how to achieve adjustable windows by utilizing a variety of other layers, each of which can be individually controlled. “Adjustable windows may have a tonal adjustable layer, an adjustable layer of reflectivity, and a hazy adjustable layer, each adjustable layer is combined with one or more transparent structural layers, such as a pair of glass window layers. “
The patent also states: “The adjustable components such as the reflectivity adjustable layer, the hazy adjustable layer, the tone adjustable layer, and the tone adjustable layer can also be inserted between a pair of glass window layers.” “Such layers will include “bold liquid crystal devices and switchable metal hydride films” and the reflectivity of light is variable.
Such windows will be made of “one or more layers of glass, polymers, conductive materials, sapphires and other materials.” “In any case, this composite structure allows for control and alteration of specific layers.
In terms of car windows, Apple has revealed a feature similar to Tesla’s.
“The windows include the front window of the vehicle and the body top window that extends throughout the roof. “Most Tesla models come with a huge glass roof that gives passengers a sense that the car has more room than it actually is. However, such body top windows can also be a problem, especially for drivers who stay in the car for long periods of time, the head may heat up due to prolonged exposure to the sun.
Tesla and other automakers are indeed taking steps to develop glass that protects drivers from UV rays to alleviate the problem. A more common solution, however, is for Tesla owners to buy back-market colored roof glass to avoid the problem.
Apple’s proposed solution is to equip the driver-adjustable top, front and side windows for automatic control once adjusted. Just as many modern cars automatically activate windshield wipers when it detects rain, Apple cars can actively color glass in particularly bright environments.
