The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted Microsoft a new patent for a smart speaker design, according to patentlyapple. Microsoft pointed out in the patent file, voice-activated smart speakers are combined with speech recognition system speakers, users can interact with it. In a voice-activated smart home speaker, its microphone array can be optimized to allow for the formation of far-field waves of incoming voice commands, and the microphone array can be positioned in a circular circle.

Although this allows optimization of omnidirectional remote voice pickups, these devices typically use an environment that is not omnidirectional open space, and the introduction of hard and soft surfaces creates absorption and reflection surfaces that can change the reception of sound commands. These acoustic surfaces provide reverb, producing secondary overlapping signals, which are usually undesirable.

To address these issues, Microsoft’s patent includes the use of image sensors on smart speaker systems to detect room conditions, allowing the calibration of microphones on smart speaker systems, and deactivating one or more microphones to prevent sound reflection (reverb).

In addition, signal processing in the speaker system can use room readings detected from the light to determine how close the speaker system is to one or more surfaces of the room. If the distance is less than the threshold distance, the acoustic reflections from these surfaces can be considered using the signal processing associated with receiving voice signals on the microphone array.
