Samsung Galaxy Fold waterproof case patent exposure

Last February, Samsung proudly unveiled its first Galaxy Fold folding screen smartphone that provides a 7.3-inch display area in tablet mode. Earlier this year, we welcomed the flip-flop Galaxy Z Flip folding screen smartphone. There is speculation that the company is likely to announce a successor to the Galaxy Fold in the second half of 2020. It is modeled SM-F916 and is expected to be sold in the name of Galaxy Fold 2. Recently, however, Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital discovered a waterproof patent for the new machine.

Although the first Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s most expensive smartphone ever, unfortunately it’s not waterproof. The good news is that the company hasn’t given up on building a water-resistant folding-screen smartphone.

On November 13, 2019, Samsung Electronics filed a patent application with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) entitled “Electronic devices with their own waterproof structure” which were officially announced to the outside world on May 22, 2020.

The patented images show a new machine that bears a lot of resemblance to the original Galaxy Fold, but there are also many notable adjustments in detail. For example, the outer screen is more narrow, or only supports the display of notifications.

As a utility model patent, the Galaxy Fold 2 features a narrow notification screen, a perient lens, and a waterproof housing. The impact of getting an IPxx rating on the price is not known at this time.

Many had speculated that Samsung’s new folding-screen smartphone would have a bigger exterior, but others speculated that it would be smaller to reduce manufacturing costs. As a result, the company can launch galaxy Fold 2 or Galaxy Fold Lite models with a targeted launch.

Based on the hardware design and pricing strategy of the Galaxy Z Flip, this is expected to give a significant boost to sales of new products. For photo ops, the Galaxy Fold 2 or the top right is equipped with two front-facing self-timer cameras, supplemented by a rear three-camera (latent / zoom / telephoto combination).

For comparison, the first-generation Galaxy Fold featured a three-camera combination of ultra-wide-angle plus wide-angle and 12MP zoom (only 2X light variation).

But on the Galaxy Fold 2, Samsung is expected to equip the machine with a 10x hybrid zoom lens similar to the Galaxy S20 Ultra.
