Microsoft is also on the verge of developing a portable smart speaker with Cortana voice assistants, following the launch of its own brand of smart speakers by technology companies such as Google, Apple and Samsung. According to the patented images, the speaker looks a bit like Amazon’s Echo, but it’s smaller.
The patent, called Smart Speaker System with Microphone Room, suggests That Microsoft is working on such a smart speaker. If the patented product does go into production, it’s likely that the speaker will be available as a Surface-branded device.
The smart speaker uses wireless protocol standards such as Internet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as optical sensors, which can be used as self-illuminating in conference rooms. There is an array of microphones at the top of the sound that can hold up to 6 microphones. Microsoft says its patented device also has a voice-activated smart home speaker system that can be calibrated to the size of the room.
The patent does not disclose other features of the speaker. The first smart speaker to support Cortana was Harmon Cardon Invoke, but it failed to compete with companies such as Google, Amazon or Samsung. With its own smart speakers, Microsoft can correct old mistakes and revive Cortana in the consumer space.
