Our exploration of higher compatibility began with the 2015 E3 announcement of down-to-date compatibility for Xbox 360 games. I was immediately brought back to that period and all the good memories that came through the game. This experience, energy and passion from the players still inspires us today.

With a lot of hard work, technological innovation, and collaboration with industry-leading creators, we’ve not only been able to bring more than 500 Xbox 360 games to Xbox One, but we’ve also been able to go back a long way and restore some of the classic series that we love most to our players from the first Xbox. The team that is working on compatibility for Xbox Series X is the one that brought classic games to Xbox One in innovative ways.

With the generational change of basic systems and chip architectures, there are huge technical challenges to maintaining compatibility. Developers highly optimize the game based on the unique features and performance of the console to provide the best experience for the player. To make the Xbox Series X our most compatible console requires significant innovations in custom processor design, as well as unique designs for the core Xbox operating system and hypervisor spree of the new generation platform.

With more than 100,000 hours of game testing, thousands of games are already running on Xbox Series X, whether it’s a hit with big work to a classic popular with fans of the series. Many in our team play every day with Xbox Series X as their primary console, while seamlessly switching between different generations of games. The Xbox Fast Architecture, powered by the strong performance of our custom NVME SSD, significantly reduces the load time of down-compatible works. When I run through my personal game collection as part of our in-house testing, these amazing classic pre-generational games are great on Xbox Series X.

The Xbox team isn’t content to just rely on increased hardware performance to improve your gaming experience. We’ve developed new platform-level features to ensure that all of your gaming experiences are constantly improving. Xbox Series X partnered with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group to provide new and innovative HDR rebuild technology that enables the platform to automatically add HDR support to games. Because this technology is handled by the platform itself, it allows us to enable HDR without compromising game performance, and we can apply it to Xbox 360 and first-generation Xbox games that were developed nearly 20 years ago and have not yet introduced HDR technology.

In addition, the new Quick Wake feature is not only available for new games, but also for downward-compatible works. Quick Wake allows players to quickly get back to where they left the game, switching quickly between multiple game pieces, ensuring that players can return to the game in an instant.
