Recently, a monkey “gang” stole a blood sample from a medical school in India that tested positive for the new coronavirus. This is undoubtedly one of the most bizarre events that has taken place so far during the pandemic that has engulfed the globe.
Indian authorities confirmed the incident Friday as a laboratory technician walked through the campus of a state-run medical school in the ancient Indian city of Milat. “The monkey took the blood samples of the four COVID-19 patients being treated and escaped…. (And) we have to take their blood samples again,” said S. Dr. K. Garg told Reuters.
The incident raised concerns. Officials were unsure whether the monkeys accidentally spilled blood samples on the ground as they fled. At least for now, “no evidence has been found that monkeys are infected with the virus,” Garg said. “
According to Johns Hopkins University, there were 173,491 new crown-confirmed cases and 4,980 deaths in India as of the time of writing. Some hospitals in Mumbai are so crowded with patients that some sleep in cardboard boxes, the New York Times reported. In fact, experts are beginning to worry that if the outbreak in India is not brought under control, there are fears that the number of cases in India could be close to a million in a few weeks.
