Tesla to build 12-seat tunnel electric bus for Boring Company

Boring Company is a tunnel mining company founded by Elon Musk, but a new report from Mercury News says Tesla, Musk’s electric car company, will build a tunnel electric bus for 12 people. Thursday’s report said the electric model is part of a new proposal approved in San Bernardino, California.

Local transport authorities have voted to approve a new plan that would allow the company to use electric buses in a high-speed tunnel. The proposed tunnel would connect the city of Rancho Cucamonga with Ontario International Airport.

Curt Hagman, the agency’s director, told reporters after the meeting that the proposal initially called for the use of conventional Tesla electric vehicles in the tunnel, but the two companies then proposed new vehicles that could hold up to 12 passengers and luggage at speeds of up to 127 miles (204 km/h).

There has been speculation that the new vehicle may have been based on a Tesla Model 3, but neither Tesla nor Boring Company responded to requests for comment as of the time of writing.

As for the proposed tunnel, it is located 35 feet underground and is 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) long. At 127 mph, the shuttle between the airport and the city will take only 90 seconds to 2 minutes.

The final offer for the project could be around $60 million, which would be much more affordable than a new light rail project with an estimated cost of $1 billion to $1.5 billion.
