On November 15th Musk announced that the German government had approved Tesla’s decision to build a plant in Berlin, for which Tesla would plant 1 million trees. The Tesla Plant in Berlin will be built on a 300-hectare plot of land next to the GVZ Berlin-Osterfreenbrink industrial park, foreign media reported.
The place is not close to Berlin, it takes about an hour to drive to Berlin, and most of the area is in rural Germany, so Tesla had to cut down a lot of trees in order to build a factory. When BMW was looking for a new plant about 20 years ago, it had to cut down some trees to build the plant, a move that was met with some resistance, so BMW eventually built a plant in Leipzig.
Musk’s solution is to donate $1 million to the corresponding project fund, and says every $1 donated will be planted with a tree, which is like the ant forest we’re using. Musk, meanwhile, changed his Twitter account to “Treelon Musk.”
