Windows 10 begins distributing WSL2 in the form of Windows Update

In the recently released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 1964, Microsoft has begun testing the distribution of WSL2 in the form of Windows Update. In March, Microsoft said in a blog post that it had made some improvements to the way the Linux kernel son on which WSL2 depends, removing the Linux kernel from the Windows OS image, and distributing it to users’ computers through Windows Update.

That is, the Linux kernel will be delivered in the same way as other third-party drivers, unbundling the system, which will bring greater agility and flexibility.

WSL 2 was announced by Microsoft on Build 2019 last year, and compared to the first generation, the new WSL has redesigned the architecture to run ELF64 Linux binaries on Windows with a true Linux kernel.

Linux binaries use system calls to perform many functions, such as accessing files, requesting memory, and creating processes. WSL 1 creates a transformation layer that translates these system calls to allow them to work on the Windows NT kernel. However, implementing all of these system calls can be challenging, preventing some applications from running in WSL 1. WSL 2 now has its own Linux kernel, which has full system call compatibility, which introduces a whole new set of applications that can run in WSL, such as the Linux version of Docker.

In the past, if you need edited the WSL2 kernel, when you try to upgrade an installed release, you might receive a message requesting that the latest kernel be downloaded and installed from the https://aka.ms/wsl2kernel.
