NetEase (Nasdaq: NTES) today announced a strategic partnership with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment to develop a new Lord Of The Rings mobile game to strengthen its post-hong Kong game reserve, media reported.
NetEase said in a statement that the newly licensed strategy game, called Lord of the Rings: Rise to War, was based on J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien’s popular trilogy adaptation.
Competition between NetEase and Tencent saw a surge in gaming revenue spent on mobile games during the New Crown virus outbreak, as people spent more time on mobile phones and computers.
The new game is also the latest effort by Chinese game developers to expand into the international market. Last year, NetEase also partnered with Marvel and Pokemon, respectively.
Both Tencent and NetEase are now vowing to make more money from overseas markets. Last year, an executive at NetEase told Reuters that the company wanted overseas revenue to account for 30 per cent of its total revenue within three years.
Last week, NetEase, which is listed on Nasdaq, raised at least $2.7bn in a second hong Kong offering. NetEase said it would use the money to fund its international expansion plans.
