Lexus released the 2021 Sports Sedan IS on Monday, which looks more angular and fresh than it looks on the market today, a major renovation in terms of appearance, media reported. As you can see, the exterior panel of the car is brand new, and even the glass on the door doesn’t seem to have come down from the 2020 model. The new IS uses a lower shark-like front, a larger and more complex spindle grille, and the F Sport version with additional functional air intakes.
But IS’s ass design is controversial. As many brands are used to doing, Lexus has connected its taillights to a central light pole. The diffuser is more noticeable and has a smaller angle around the license plate, but its butt design uses the “Bangle butt” that many people don’t like.
Lexus said the new IS would be the first model with the Lexus Driving Signature, a unified concept that would extend across the product line. The Lexus brand doesn’t say exactly what that means, but it seems that the new Lexus models are becoming more driver-oriented. The new IS is the first Lexus developed at the newly established Toyota Technology Shimoyama Center in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The technology center has a 3.3-mile test track with elevation changes and various corner types and road surfaces.
Since the new IS uses the same platform as the current model, its wheelbase remains the same, but the new model has increased its length and width by 1.2 inches.
Although the exterior changes in the car are large, only minor changes are received internally. Now the vents at both ends of the dashboard are no longer rectangular vents, but round, and the center consoleand and armrests have been redesigned with some new color and decorative options, but that’s all. The biggest news inside the car is infotainment, which has now been converted into a touch screen. The standard 8-inch screen is placed closer to the driver, and the 10.3-inch screen is still available. In addition to Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto, the system integrates Amazon Alex.
The powertrain is also configured in the same way as the current model. The basic rear-wheel drive IS 300 is powered by an inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but the eight-speed automatic transmission has been improved. Confusingly, however, the IS 300 all-wheel drive board uses a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 engine with an output and torque peaks of 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft, respectively, with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The IS 350 also offers a rear drive (RWD) and full drive (AWD) option, which is a 3.5L V6 engine with a 3.5L V6 engine with an output power and torque peakofs of 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, respectively. The IS 350 RWD uses an eight-speed transmission, while the AWD is six speeds. Lexus revealed that the IS 350 RWD’s 100km acceleration time is 5.6 seconds, as is currently the case.
In addition to the unique bumperand and other internal and external styling, the F Sport version adds a cold air intake and sports exhaust system. The biggest highlight of this model is the Dynamic Handling Package, which will bring adaptive suspension, 19-inch forged BBS wheels, card keys and more. The DHP-equipped car also comes with sport S-plus driving mode and limited-slip differentials – both of which are also available in the cash- IS.
Like other new Lexus models, IS will also be equipped with fairly comprehensive safety features, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking system, road sign assistance, rear cross traffic alarms and blind spot monitoring.
Lexus said IS would go on sale this fall, but did not disclose prices. Prices are likely to rise slightly compared to the 2020 model, which will start at around $40,000 and the highest price is expected to be 350 F Sport, close to $55,000.
