New patent suggests Huawei Mate 40 or use side-screen virtual shutter button

Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital has just reported on Huawei’s new patent for a side-touch UI, and the Mate 40 Series smart machine is expected to be available later this year. Looking back at last year’s Mate 30 Series smart machines, we’ve brought virtual volume keys and an 88-degree arc screen. In addition to the solid power key, other features have been replaced by virtual keys.

The Mate 30 series is known to have opted for the so-called “floating shutter release” button. However, the new patent suggests that the Mate 40 Series is expected to go a step further, integrating many control options, including the camera shutter, into the side virtual UI.

On July 6, 2019, Huawei filed a patent application for the design with the State Property Office, which was released to the outside world on June 16, 2020, with 10 product images and brief descriptions.

Huawei describes in the patent such a side-screen touch scheme, which covers the parameter settings of the s,”flash, white balance, and flip camera icons, while the far right is used as a virtual shutter button.

Another scenario starts with the parameter settings and icons, followed by HDR, flash, white balance, and PIC gallery icons.

The illustration also unwittingly shows the design of the front-facing dual camera, but this time the center screen notch gap is smaller. There are no keys on the top of the device, but the USB-C port and SIM slot are arranged at the bottom.

Given that the Mate 30 series is released on September 19, 2019, it is expected that Mate 40 will also be available around October. Unfortunately, the back design of the new machine is still unknown.
