Amazon says Climate Pledge Arena will become the world’s first zero-carbon-certified stadium, which will use 100 percent renewable energy and generate zero waste in operations and activities. In addition, it will use recycled rainwater to create the ice surface of the ice hockey game.

Amazon has also pushed several other climate-centric projects. Bezos himself has pledged $10 billion to a fund named after him that will support scientists, activists and non-governmental organizations working to fight climate change. Earlier this week, Amazon also launched a venture called Climate Pledge Fund, which will invest $2 billion in environmentally focused clean energy start-ups. In April, Amazon also launched a $10 million forest conservation grant.

Yet Amazon’s often-criticized overpacking also needs to be considered. Whether a green, environment-conscious stadium can offset this impact remains to be seen.
