AMD will release the next-generation high-end graphics card based on the RDNA 2 Plus architecture, Big Navi Core, known to have three different versions of Navi 21, Navi 22, Navi 23, and the smaller the number represents the larger and more high-end of the corresponding core. Interestingly, Navi 31 is back!
Looking at the numbers alone, it should be a more next-generation product, but the launch plan shouldn’t be so fast, and the Navi 31 code name appears this time in apple’s just-announced new version of macOS Big Sur 11.0, apparently a custom version of Apple.
MacOS Big Sur will be the biggest change in Apple’s desktop operating system from inside to outside in a decade, and will for the first time leave the Intel x86 architecture to support Apple’s self-developing ARM architecture processor, but it is clear that Apple and AMD will continue to work together in depth on GPU graphics.
AMD has customized a number of graphics products for Apple, and many are far outnumbered on Windows platforms, such as the recently added Radeon Pro 5600M in the 16-inch MacBook Pro, the first and only Navi 14-based graphics card to date, and with HBM high bandwidth memory, far more than any AMD discrete graphics card in the Windows notebook.
For now, Navi 31 should be the Apple custom version of Navi 21, even with a good chance that it will be a custom enhanced version, not excluding navi 21 as an incomplete castration version, and Navi 31 as a full-blooded version.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Navi 31’s name has appeared, as early as December last year, when it was spotted, and writing “NV31” also hints at a difference from Navi 20/series.
In addition, in the professional computing card, Arcturus (Big Horn star) has been rumored for too long, but has not been born, but recently AMD finally confirmed that the next generation of computing card named Radeon Instinct MI100, will be the first use of CDNA architecture, and the latest discovery of a higher-end Radeon Instinct MI200, and even the possibility of a dual-core design.
In addition, AMD’s next-generation Ryzen APU is codenamed “Cezanne” and the CPU side will be based on the Zen 3 architecture, which the GPU side had hoped to use on RDNA Navi, but it looks like a further version of Vega.
Cezann’s name also appears in the macOS code, and the corresponding ID string is “CZN_Renoir”, which is closely related to the current Renoir, further confirming the closeness of the two, the GPU can almost completely confirm or Vega.
