Amazon employees in Germany go on strike to protest lack of transparency

Germany’s service industry union said the protest, which will last for at least 48 hours, was “good and healthy work” and condemned the US retail giant’s lack of transparency after staff were infected.

“We have information that at least 30 to 40 colleagues have contracted the new crown pneumonia virus,” said Orhan Akman, a union representative.

Amazon faces a long battle with German unions over higher wages and a working environment for logistics workers, who have been on strike since 2013.

Unions said the strike would take place in Leipzig, Bad Hersfeld, Rheinberg, Werne and Koblenz. The union says Amazon puts the company’s profits ahead of employee safety.

Amazon rejected the accusation in a statement, saying it had invested $4 billion since June to protect employees and customers around the world from the risk of the new coronavirus.

Amazon is the largest market for amazons outside the U.S., with 470 million bottles of hand sanitizer, 21 million gloves, 19 million masks and face protections and 39 million boxes of disinfectant wipes since February, an Amazon spokesman said.
