Shenzhen Stock Exchange listed, lithium-ion battery manufacturer Ningde Times (CATL) has begun to build its lithium-ion battery laboratory in Ningde, Fujian, 21C laboratory. The laboratory covers an area of approximately 18 hectares (270 acres) with a total investment of 3.3 billion yuan and a construction period of five years (2019-2023) and is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2021, attracting thousands of experts and talents within five years, focusing on the development of the next generation of battery and new energy conversion systems.
21C Labs not only develops advanced lithium metal batteries, all-solid-state batteries and sodium ion batteries, but also works on commercial applications of its technology, such as the development of lithium-ion battery reliability models and non-destructive testing technologies.
As the world’s leading battery manufacturer of electric vehicles, Ningdis has received widespread attention for reaching a deal with Tesla. In February, Nindze and Tesla signed a two-year contract from July 2020 to June 2022. Under the contract, the company will supply batteries for the Model 3, which is produced at Tesla’s Shanghai plant.
In addition, Ningde Is understood to be working with Tesla to produce a million miles of batteries. Earlier this month, the company’s chairman and founder, Zeng Weiqun, said the company was ready to produce its million-mile battery.
The new battery will last for 16 years and will last 1.24 million miles (2 million kilometers) of electric vehicles, Mr. Zeng said.
Earlier,media reported that the new battery will be first launched in China,media believe that this is because Tesla plans to launch in China with a new, lower-cost, longer-life battery Model 3.
