The car’s latest test in the South African desert has brought it to a staggering 1010km/h (628mph), while the team that has been on the track for about a year is now speeding up.
With an on-board EJ200 jet engine that generates 9 kN thrust, the Bloodhound LSR crossed the Kalahari Desert on Saturday. It was seen covering a distance of 5 miles (8 kilometers) in just 50 seconds, and before reaching maximum speed, it deployed a parachute at an 11km (6.8 miles) mark to begin the braking process.
The 628-mph effort followed a recent test run that saw the Bloodhound LSR race surpass 450 mph (725 km/h), 500 mph (805 km/h) and 550 mph (885 km/h) milestones to complete the high-speed test phase. From here, the team will prepare the car to break the land speed record.
Norwegian company Nammo is developing a rocket designed to give The Bloodhound LSR the power it needs to set a historic record. The single propellant rocket is expected to equip the vehicle with an additional 60 kN thrust, which the team hopes will enable the vehicle to speed faster than the 763 mph (1228 km/h) reached by the Thrust SSC in 1997.
The team built 192 sensors into the car, all of which were used to collect data on fluid dynamics and resistance in all of these high-speed tests. According to the team, analysis of the latest tests showed that the air flow under the car was instantly supersonic, even peeling some paint off the body.
The data will guide the final design of the Nammo rocket, which will be installed in the car before a record attempt of 12 to 18 months.
