Ishan Agarwal, a well-known source, tweeted: “OMG! After my MacBook Pro upgrades macOS Big Sur, Safari can stream 4K live streams with Dolby Vision on Netflix. It’s really wonderful to support 1080P video with Dolby Vision. “

MacOS Catalina and earlier Versions of Safari limit Netflix content to 1080P resolution, but 4K of Netflix content can be played in Big Sur and support Dolby Vision and HDR10 for more vivid colors.

It’s important to note that viewing 4K HDR content on your Mac requires a 2018 or later Mac, so older Macs are still limited to 1080P resolution after upgrading macOS Big Sur. As we reported last week, tvOS 14 and iOS 14 are now compatible with YouTube’s VP9 codecs, allowing you to view 4K YouTube content on these platforms, but the codec is not yet supported in MacOS Big Sur’s Safari 14.
