At noon Beijing time on November 18, according tomedia reports, Apple’s iPhone series is expected to adopt a 5G communication connection in 2020. With this shift, Apple will be the leader in 5G smartphone shipments, according to a new report released today by Strategy Analytics. The company predicts that Apple will be the market leader when three new 5G iPhones are launched next year.
Ken Hyers, director of Strategy Analytics, commented: “Apple doesn’t currently have 5G phones in its portfolio, but it can surpass the current 5G market leaders Samsung and Huawei – which may sound counterintuitive” and “there will be three new 5G models coming next year.” Apple needs to match the speed of upgrades to its new iPhone model to take the lead in the 5G handset market next year. “
At present, Samsung is the “undisputed leader in the 5G smartphone market”. With both Apple and Huawei adopting 5G technology in the coming year and each dominating the U.S. and China, Strategy Analytics expects Samsung to take a hit.
Over time, however, the company expects Samsung to regain its 5G crown. Specifically, as 5G technology expands to the lower end of the market, “despite Apple’s strong performance in the 5G market in 2020, Samsung will regain its 5G crown in the long run.” As more and more markets shift to 5G, Samsung will take a majority of its share of the more price range with its dominant position in the entire smartphone market and its broader portfolio of 5G devices. “
Reports and analysts say Apple will bring 5G connectivity to the entire iPhone’s flagship product line next fall. The company is likely to use Qualcomm’s modems, but it continues to work hard to build its own internal modems.
