Patents show Samsung is developing collapsible flexible battery technology

Although Samsung has released two folding-screen smartphones, the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip, in different shapes, the interior component design is still very limited. Since the battery is not as flexible as the screen can curl, the folding screen smart machine on the market in the use of one side of the small battery scheme. The good news is that a patent recently discovered by LetsGoDigital, a Dutch technology blog, suggests that Samsung is working on an innovative flexible battery solution.

If that can be realized, Samsung can clearly make the folding-screen device slimmer without sacrificing other components.

The South Korean electronics giant is understood to have filed a practical patent application for a flexible battery and electronic devices containing it at the end of 2019.

The 56-page document, which was officially released on June 25, 2020, details the appearance of flexible batteries and new collapsible devices.

In addition to the patents themselves, the documents reveal two different phone models, one of which is similar to the waterproof Galaxy Fold device reported by LetsGoDigital last month.

The second device has no less than three folding lines and multiple but smaller housings. Even folded into jagged shape when the hinge design allows.

The document states that both housings can have a flexible battery built in, or the same flexible battery can be placed on either side of the device (can be bent to 180 degrees).

By alternating multiple cores using positive and negative electrode substrates, the patent also creates more use scenarios. But for some time to come, it’s clear that we won’t be able to see such a design on retail equipment.

Because the second-generation Galaxy Fold will still use a dual battery system of 2090 mAh plus 2275 mAh with a total capacity of 4365 mAh, based on battery certification information announced on June 15, 2020.
