Antibody tests showed that she later developed the disease, and geneticists sequenced the genomes of 70 people she eventually infected to prove that the virus came from outside China. Each of the patients involved has the same or similar version of SARS-CoV-2.
Patient A0 did not meet with any of the neighbors. Patient B1.1 lives downstairs. The Mother of B1.1 (B2.2) and her boyfriend (B2.3) visited on 26 March and attended a party on 29 March. The two then met with men C1.1 and his sons C1.2 and C1.3.
C1.1 was the first to go to the hospital after suffering a stroke on 2 April. His sons took him to a hospital, where he came into contact with several others. On 6 April, he was transferred to a second hospital.
On 7 April, patient B2.3 began to develop SYMPTOMs of COVID-19 and tested positive two days later. On April 9 and 10, all of his contacts tested positive, including the man who had a stroke. C1.1 was isolated in a second hospital. But at the time, he had infected 28 other people at the first hospital, including five nurses and a doctor. At the second hospital, the patient infected another 20 people.
It was not until April 9 that contact trackers learned that A0 had returned from the United States, when they were able to detect COVID-19 and antibodies. The following image shows the spread of the disease.
“Therefore, we believe that A0 is an asymptomatic infected person, and B1.1 was infected by touching the surface in the elevator of the building where the two of them lived,” the researchers wrote. “As of April 22, 2020, A0 remains asymptomatic, with 71 SARS-CoV-2 positive cases detected in the cluster infection.”
“Our results show how a single asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to widespread community transmission,” the study authors note. “The report also highlights the resources required for case investigation and the challenges associated with containing SARS-CoV-2. Continued measures to protect, screen and isolate infected persons are essential to mitigate and contain the COVID-19 pandemic. “
