A new study has found that animal proteins are more effective than soy and wheat proteins in maintaining the muscles that people build in their youth,media reported. Soybean and wheat are two of the most popular plant alternatives. The findings were recently presented at the Future Physiology 2020 Conference of the British Physiological Society. The purpose of this study is to assess the potential of plant proteins to maintain muscle per gram compared to animal products.
As the public turns to greener food alternatives, plant-based diets have quickly become popular over the past few years. These emerging diets are linked to a number of potential health benefits, including reduced risk of certain cancers, reduced risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes, and reduced inflammation.
However, there has been some controversy over the long-term consequences of fully following a plant-based diet. Some studies have found that for sustainable health, eating eggs and fish in addition to a large amount of vegetables and fruits is the ideal diet. So is plant protein as effective at building and maintaining muscle as animal proteins?
It’s not easy to answer this question because the reasons behind it are very complex. As you get older, your muscle mass decreases, and the decrease in muscle mass is usually associated with a decrease in the number of muscles that the body consumes from amino acids. In order to obtain amino acids, people must eat protein, for most of human history, human protein is mainly dependent on animal food.
Although plant proteins can also be used to strengthen muscles, new research reports that the body needs to consume more plant protein to increase muscle mass than animal proteins. As a person ages, they are more likely to lose muscle if they switch from an animal-based diet to a plant-based diet without increasing their protein intake, the study said.
Because of this, the study notes, it is best to eat foods containing plant and animal protein at the same time in order to maintain muscle mass during aging. But the study limited the study to wheat and soybeans, and perhaps some other plant-based proteins are more effective at maintaining muscle.
