ACCORDING TO FOREIGN MEDIA REPORTS, SEAT’S EYE-CATCHING HATCHBACK ELECTRIC VEHICLE CONCEPT HAS BEEN GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT TO BE PUT INTO PRODUCTION, THE CAR WILL BE CUPRA EL-BORN AS THE FUTURE MARKET. It is reported that the electric city car launched late last year, the purpose is to show SEAT’s vision of how to use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric vehicle platform to create something affordable but interesting.
That means there is no big compromise on range or performance, although SEAT was tight-lipped about whether el-Born would become its first MEB-based electric car. For CUPRA el-Born, that has changed.
Most obviously, there’s a brand new dashboard here. What is missing is the Model 3 plane shown in the original concept car, replaced by a more aggressive sculpted grille. The rest look closer to the concept of electric cars. However, this should be a fairly practical car, with wheels pushed into corners to maximize cabin space.
As far as performance is concerned, CUPRA seems a bit shy about all the numbers. The automaker didn’t announce a 0-60mph (100km acceleration) time, but shared the 0-31mph acceleration in 2.9 seconds. However, the original release of the el-Born concept car is said to be able to accelerate to 100 kilometers in 7.5 seconds, and it is understood that its output power can be up to 201 horsepower.
According to CUPRA, the new Dynamic Chassis Control Motion (DCC Motion) system was developed specifically for el-Born. The carmaker says its goal is to create a more dynamic driving experience for drivers.
In terms of batteries, 77kWh of 82kWh batteries are available. CupRA says it can bring 500 kilometers of range under wlTP standards instead of EPA tests. Its fast charge will be able to charge the car in 30 minutes with a compatible charger to fill the car with at least 260 km of range.
The cab will be equipped with bucket seats, augmented reality head-up display, and a new steering wheel design with Drive Profile Select and CUPRA mode buttons. CUPRA says it will also focus on the sustainability of the car, including unspecified recycled materials. It seems that VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 has at least shared a lot of its switching equipment and in-house technology for this car.
It is reported that CUPRA el-Born will be in production at Volkswagen’s plant in Tsvikau, which will be launched next year.
