Retail giant Wal-Mart has announced that it will require customers to wear masks starting July 20,media CNET reported. The requirement will also extend to Sam’s Members, A Wal-Mart’s wholesale retailer.
“As the number of confirmed cases in communities across the United States has recently increased, so has the number and type of mask regulations implemented,” Lance de la Rosa, Wal-Mart’s chief operating officer, and Lance de la Rosa, chief operating officer of Sam’s Club, wrote in a press release Wednesday. “At the moment, about 65 per cent of our more than 5,000 stores and clubs are located in areas where the government has some form of authorization for masks.”
Wal-Mart will put up signs and post designated “Health Ambassador” employees outside the store entrance to remind shoppers to wear masks.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing or speaking by infected people. These droplets can fall in someone else’s mouth or nose or are sucked into the lungs. The CDC recommends that people wear cloth masks when they are in public, especially when other social isolation measures are not possible, to avoid the spread of the new coronavirus.
