Videocardz, citing @Komachi’s Twitter account, said that through Videocardz, AMD has a mysterious Navi 22 GPU that may be part of the next generation of RDNA 2 families. @Komachi at least three new GPU-based GPU products are expected to be available for consumer-grade Radeon RX and professional-grade Radeon Pro stand-alone product lines. There has also been revelations that The Navy Flounder is likely to be used in future Mac models.
The first graphics product based on the RDNA 2 architecture is expected to arrive from the end of the third quarter to the beginning of the fourth quarter of this year, but AMD has so far confirmed that only three new products will be available in 2020.
These include the much-anticipated Big Navi GPU (said to be Navi 21) and two versions custom-made for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony PlayStation 5 consoles.
But before Navi 21 and Navi 23 came to light, we discovered the existence of Navi 22. Now, the chip has been first discovered in the latest Linux patch by Coelacanth-dream.
Blogs show that the new patch adds support for AMD’s next-generation RDNA 2 GPU, codenamed Navy Flounder. The architecture of the new chip is GFX 10.3 (commonly known as the GFX103X series of RDNA 2 chips).
Given that Navi 21 is based on GFX1030 and Navi 23 is based on GFX1032, it is assumed that Navi 22 will be based on the GFX1031 graphics architecture, and that the Arcturus GPU may be based on the Vega GPU that has been revised for the new CDNA design.
The Navi 22 “Navy Flounder” has a more varied design than navi 21 “Sienna Cichlid”, for example, using the next-generation VCN 3.0 video core and DCN 3.0 display core, but there is also evidence that Navi 22 has a weaker specification than Navi 21.
In terms of specifications, Navi 22 has only one VC3 instance, while Navi 21 has two. In addition, compared to the four instances on the Navi 21, the SDMA controller has been cut to only two.
Another assumption is that since Navi 22 will be a direct follow-up to Navi 12, it may be primarily for Apple Macs.
The Navi 12-based Radeon RX 5600M, for example, is the only RDNA 1 graphics chip with an HBM2 memory design and belonging to the Radeon Pro product line.
But from the “Navy Flounders” mentioned in the Linux patch, we’re also expected to see the corresponding consumer platform version, not just Apple Mac.
Previous rumors have also suggested that the Navi 22 has a chip size of about 340 m2, but it’s just a matter of speculation that we still don’t know more details and exact specifications for AMD RDNA 2 consumer desktop graphics cards.
Navi 21 / Navi 22 / Navi 23 is said to have 505 / 340 / 240 m2m2 in GPU cores, and both Nvitech and AMD are rumoured to be planning to release a new generation of flagship game graphics cards by September 2020.
If so, the AMD RDNA 2 GPU will compete directly with NvidA’s next generation of Ampere GPUs. As for the truth, please be patient with this year’s 3-4 season of the good play.
