Thunderbird 78 Stable is officially released and is also the latest ESR (extended support version). This release is designed to improve the Experience of Thunderbird. The new version redesigns the window for writing messages to make it easier for users to find functionality and to write messages faster and more directly.
Redesign the mail writing window.
Thubderbird follows system settings. See description: setting dark mode in Mac or setting dark mode in Windows.
Calendar and task integration.
Thunderbird’s Lightning calendar and task attachments are now part of the app, and these features are available to everyone. Most of the improvements will focus on improving interoperability with Thunderbird mail and improving the user experience of the calendar.
Account settings and account centers have been updated.
The account settings window and account center tabs have been updated, and the layout and dialog boxes have been improved to make it easier for users to understand information and find related settings.
Folder icons and color updates.
The folder icon has been replaced and modernized with the new vector style. This will ensure better compatibility with HiDPI monitors and dark mode. Vector icons also mean that users can customize colors to better distinguish and categorize folder lists.
Minimize to tray.
Thunderbird 78 on Windows can now be minimized to the tray.
Supports end-to-end encrypted e-mail.
Thunderbird 78.2, coming in the coming months, will provide a new feature that allows users to encrypt email end-to-end through OpenPGP. In the past, this feature was implemented primarily in Thunderbird through The Enigmail attachment, but this release introduced this functionality to the core Thunderbird.
