July 23 (UPI) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said he is confident of rolling out fully autonomous driving by the end of the year, according tomedia reports. Earlier this month, Musk said at the opening of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) that the company was “very close” to achieving level 5 self-driving technology and was confident of developing the basic features of the technology this year.
By the level of self-driving technology, level 5 autopilot is fully autonomous driving, i.e. no human operation is required in any scenario.
Last year, Musk also predicted that Tesla would get regulatory approval from several states by the end of 2020 to allow its self-driving cars to hit the road.
While Tesla is not yet fully autonomous, the electric cars it has built after October 2016 are equipped with the hardware needed for fullself autonomous driving. When the software is ready, these cars will be fully autonomous.
In addition, Musk said Tesla has updated Autopilot’s driver assistance software to identify parking signs. Autopilot has always been noticeable, but it’s only partially automated.
