A new study by Strategy Analytics shows that home-based workers will reduce their commutes by billions and reduce office-based work environments by 22 percent. The analysis is based on the emergence of four groups of employees in the post-epidemic employment environment: 24% of those who fled the city: they love working from home (WFH), and half of them want to work from home forever. Home care groups make up 30 per cent, and they don’t like working from home very much.

Commuters, who make up 37 percent of those with lower incomes in the retail, health and construction industries, are unlikely to work from home in the future. The telecommuting population has been working from home, at 9 per cent.

The free report ” After the Outbreak: Expanding the Impact of Continuing Home Work” is based on an online survey of 9,000 respondents in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom in March, April and May.

In the underlying forecast scenario, the report predicts:

In the long term, the number of people working from home can increase by up to 300 per cent compared to pre-outbreak levels. Billions of annual commutes will have a significant impact on transportation and other sectors.

Many employers are reviewing their home-based policies, but research shows that a large percentage of employees, especially those who previously worked in the office, are happy to continue working long hours from home.

Working from home does create problems of isolation and communication difficulties for some employees, but it’s less important than the benefits of working from home.

David Mercer, vice president, chief analyst and author of the report, said: “Employees have spoken out and the decision is now up to employers. During an outbreak, the absence of commuting is the main factor in people’s enthusiasm for working from home; “

The report identifies a number of other topics that need further exploration, including:

How much does an employee want or need to socialize in the office on a regular basis?

What products and services will help alleviate the main concern of working from home – isolation; which business models will provide the greatest return?

To what extent will the increase in home work accelerate changes in travel behavior? For example, reduce or increase private vehicle ownership and reduce the use of public transport?
