AMD has promised to launch the Zen3 processor for the 7nm plus process this year, followed by the new 5nm process Zen4, and the EPYC server processor Genoa will debut the Zen4. Previous lying suggests that the Zen4 should be available in 2022, but it may be ahead of schedule, and AMD now has a sample of 5nm Zen4.
TSMC will mass produce 5nm process this year, before the biggest customers are Apple and Huawei, the normal is not AMD, but the situation has changed recently, AMD’s position in TSMC has greatly improved, in 2021 7nm and 5nm production capacity of up to 200,000 wafers, far more than the current level.
On the other hand, the progress of Zen3 should be to the final stage of the listing, streaming, verification has long passed, and now it is reported that 5nm Zen4 has samples, meaning that the stream is complete.
It is reported that the current flow of 5nm Zen4 chip although the detailed specifications are unknown, but the core area of about 80mm2, than the current 7nm Zen2 core area of 74mm2 higher than 10%.
TSMC claims that the 5nm process can increase transistor density by 80% compared to the 7nm process, so that the 5nm Zen4 core 80mm2 can accommodate at least 12 cores, many 16-core CPU cores, double the current Zen2.
Of course, in fact, how many cores can be done within each chip also depends on AMD’s architecture design, theoretically there is the possibility of doubling, so AMD can create up to 128 core 256 thread EPYC processor, mainstream desktop Ryzen to 32 core is not impossible.
