On August 6th CATL, a Tesla supplier and lithium-ion battery maker, announced it as the head supplier of Mercedes-Benz batteries. Ningde Times said the two sides will jointly develop leading battery technology to support the large-scale electrification of Mercedes-Benz models. At present, the two sides have begun the next generation of battery research and development work, research and development results will also be applied in the next few years the two sides launched in the cooperative models.
The strategic agreement covers a wide range of power battery technologies, including the battery coreand modules for Mercedes-Benz passenger car products, and the overall battery pack for its light commercial vehicle products, with promising and innovative technology configurations, such as the CtP (module-free battery pack) product design in the Ningde era. This design saves traditional modules by integrating the battery core directly into the battery pack.
Mercedes-Benz is accelerating its “electric first” strategy, and the Ningde era will provide it with advanced batteries, modules and battery packs that meet carbon-neutral standards.
The EQS pure electric luxury sedan, which has its battery module, will be launched in 2021 and will have a range of more than 700 km (WLTP standard) and double the charging speed of the existing model, Ningde Times said.
Ningde Era was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Ningde, Fujian Province. The company specializes in the development, production and sales of new energy vehicle power battery systems and energy storage systems, and is committed to providing solutions for new energy applications around the world.
In February, Tesla and Nindze signed a two-year contract from July 2020 to June 2022. Under the contract, Ningde Times will supply batteries for the Model 3, which is produced at Tesla’s Shanghai plant.
In addition, Nindy Hasteam partnered with Tesla to produce a million miles of batteries. The new battery will last for 16 years and allow electric cars to travel 1.24 million miles, the company’s chairman and founder, Zeng Yuqun, said. But the cost of producing batteries, including Tesla’s home-made Model 3, will be 10 per cent higher than the batteries currently available to electric car makers, including Tesla’s model 3.
Earlier, media reported that the new battery will be first launched in China, media believe that this is because Tesla plans to launch in China with a new, lower-cost, longer-life battery Model 3.
