Researchers develop system to determine gunman’s location via smartphone video

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have developed a new technology that can pinpoint the gunman’s location using video footage taken from three smartphones, media reported. The importance of tools like this, especially in this day and age, cannot be underestimated. It is reported that the system is called video event reconstruction and analysis (VERA), using machine learning technology to synchronize video signals and calculate the approximate position based on its advantage points.

More important to this process is audio.

Vera is understood to have obtained access to the source of the gun by analysing the delay between the shock waves generated by supersonic bullets and the explosion of the muzzle. Audio provides information about the type of gun, which helps determine the speed of the bullet.

Researchers who developed VERA showed the system last month at the Computer Society’s Multimedia International Conference, which even released it as open source.
