German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended Huawei at a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) conference in Leipzig, Germany, media reported. “We shouldn’t exclude anyone from the start,” she told party members, referring to the 5G contract process. Her comments come as the current US government is pressing Huawei to be a security threat.
Ms Merkel’s comments appear to run counter to the views of other members of her party. According to Politico, CDU members have drafted three bills that would directly or indirectly ban Huawei from the country’s 5G network. In addition, the German foreign minister from the Social Democratic Party said: “When it comes to the security of our critical infrastructure, we cannot ignore the political and legal realities faced by our suppliers.”
Whether Germany will eventually adopt Huawei’s technology will depend on which political faction ultimately can defeat the other.
