Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX, a US space exploration technology company, has the ultimate goal of colonizing Mars, arguing that sending humans to Mars is no longer a problem and that surviving on the red planet is a bigger challenge. At a recent “Humans to Mars” summit, Musk shared progress on SpaceX’s starships and rockets, but also expressed concern about building a base on Mars.
Musk said it would be “very difficult” to build a self-sufficient City of Mars, and that settlers could face many dangers while developing the Galactic civilization.

Musk and many others are working on a plan that would minimize the risk of death of Mars colonists due to difficulties or accidents. In fact, their goal is to make life on Mars comfortable after a long working and recreational life, or at least to make it look more like life on Earth.
Many questions have been raised about how humans colonized Mars, such as how we would target Musk’s planned hundreds of starships at the right time for the shortest and safest travel. How will the spacecraft land safely on the surface of Mars? How will astronauts comfortably spend up to a year in space?
All of these problems need to be solved before humans come into contact with the surface of Mars, and when they reach Mars, the logistics of the colonists become a big problem. According to current estimates, the trip itself would take several years, and participants in the colonial project would be informed that the trip could be one-way.
These people will continue to work and live on Mars until the end of life is natural. In addition, Musk noted that poor conditions could easily lead to the accidental death of the colonists.
Musk told the conference that getting humans to settle on Mars was his long-term goal, and that building reusable rockets and powerful and complex life support systems was his top priority. Musk has successfully transported astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), where NASA and others have deployed long-term life-support technology.
But unlike NASA’s Advanced Life Support program, the advanced life support technologies needed for future human missions will include physicochemical technologies to improve the atmosphere, water recovery, waste treatment, and resource recovery, bioprocessing technologies for food production, and system modeling, analysis, and control technologies related to integrated subsyss system operations.
In other words, while there are many different functions on the ISS, such as water recovery, settlers on the moon or Mars will need long-term support for the same population, who cannot rotate every few months as the station’s residents do.
In addition, the Mars mission requires advanced maintenance technology. In planning the task, the researchers cited chemical processes such as 3D printers and lid bonding, because it was easier to send raw materials that could be turned into 100 different things or 50 different drugs, and the right chemical process could recycle waste into fertilizer molecules.
