Xiaomi smart machine new design patent exposure using a dual pop-up front and rear camera.

In recent years, mobile phone manufacturers have been trying to improve the “screen share” of the smartphone’s full-screen, and have come up with camera module designs that include notch slotting, punching, flipping, sliding caps, and even electric pop-ups. Interestingly, Dutch technology blogger LetsGoDigital recently discovered that Xiaomi has filed a patent for a smart phone design using a dual pop-up front and rear camera.

The scheme of a hidden front-facing camera may start taking off in early 2021. However, the actual image quality still faces some difficulties.

In contrast, the mechanical structure of an electric pop-up camera is more complex, and more trade-offs need to be made between cost and durability.

However, at the end of 2019, Xiaomi filed a patent application for the smart design with the State Intellectual Property Office (CNIPA), which was officially announced on September 8, 2020.

With 16 color renderings and a short description, the concept model features a flat display and an ultra-narrow betride, with front camera openings not visible throughout the front.

To our surprise, the concept model also doesn’t have a camera on its back, but is placed on a retractable top like a front camera, popping up like a pair of rabbit ears.

When it comes to pop-up cameras, many people may soon be reminded of several models that OPPO has introduced, such as the Reno series of shark fin electric lift camera modules.

Xiaomi, however, has a slightly different design concept, with two cameras from this concept model popping up at a specific angle (similar to a V-type) and the front and rear cameras relying on this (or a total of four sensors).

As you can see from the figure, the rear master also has an LED flash integrated above the rear cover and a microphone opening at the top.

Volume adjustment and power buttons are also placed on the right side of the body, with a dual speaker grille and USB Type-C charging/data port at the bottom.

Unfortunately, as a concept design, we don’t yet know when or if Xiaomi intends to bring similar models to market.
