Google’s annual hardware launch is officially held on September 30, US time. For the average consumer, the biggest points of view for the launch are the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) phones , although they are no longer at the heart of Google’s official language.
In addition, Google unveiled Google TV services and Chromecast hardware with it, as well as a smart speaker called Nest Audio.
Frankly, it was a bit of a boring launch, and even a bit disappointing.
Google Pixel 5: Expensive mediocrity.
This year’s Google Pixel 5 is too middle-of-the-road compared to last year’s Pixel 4 sword.
The Front of the Google Pixel 5 features a 6.0-inch punched full screen with a 19.5:9 screen ratio, 1080x2340p resolution, HDR support, and refresh rates of up to 90Hz.
One of the highlights here is the equal distance between the top and bottom borders of the Google Pixel 5, which adds to its aesthetic.
Under this design, the Pixel 5 no longer has a large border above the front, which means that this generation of products has abandoned the radar sensors used last year and the resulting face recognition features — yes, the Pixel 5 uses rear fingerprint recognition.
At the processor level, the Pixel 5 features a Qualcomm SnapDragon 765G octa-core processor. As a flagship model, the Pixel 5 doesn’t choose the SnapSnapdragon 865, which seems a bit out of character, but it’s also likely to be based on a balance of power consumption and battery life.
It’s worth noting that the Pixel 4’s built-in Pixel Core is not inherited from the Pixel 5.
In the Q&A segment, the Pixel Hardware team said that with software optimization, the Pixel 5 was able to achieve a photo experience similar to last year’s SnapDragon 855 plus Pixel Neural Core, supported by SnapDragon 765G.
In any case, the Pixel Core has been abandoned by Pixel 5.
However, beyond the SnapDragon 765G, the Pixel 5 retains the Titan M Security Module, which is designed to protect the security of the device.
For shooting, the Pixel 5 features rear-facing dual cameras, a 12.2-megapixel main camera and a 1600-pixel wide-angle camera, and an 8-megapixel camera in front of it – it’s worth noting that the Google Pixel 5 adds a “human night mode”, which means that night view is used simultaneously in human image mode.
The PIxel 5 offers a significant improvement in charging and battery life. It supports 18W wired charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, and a large 4000 mAh battery is built in, officially claiming to last a full day.
In terms of connectivity, the Pixel 5 is definitely a 5G phone. In addition to the necessary 2G/3G/4G functionality, the Pixel 5 supports sub-6GHz and millimeter wave 5G systems – the Pixel 5 integrates a Qualcomm SnapDragon X52 modem.
In other configurations, the Pixel 5 has a Type-C interface that supports IP68-class dust and water resistance, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC, and just Black and Sorta Sage colors.
In terms of price, the Pixel 5 is only 8GB plus 128GB in one configuration and costs $699 (RMB 4745) – a touching price that makes the Google Pixel 5 the world’s most expensive smartphone with a SnapDragon 756G processor.
Google Pixel 4a (5G) and other smart hardware.
Pixel 4a (5G)
In fact, in Google’s official discourse system, the Pixel 5 is not as highly valued as the pixel 4a (5G), another phone.
Compared to the Pixel 5, the Pixel 4a (5G) lacks features such as 90Hz screen refresh rate, IP68 dust-resistant, mmWale 5G, wireless charging, and so on, and has a 200 mAh less battery capacity, but it also has some exclusive features, such as a 3.5mm headphone connector and a larger 6.2-inch screen.
The Pixel 4a (5G) sells for $499.
Chromecast with Google TV.
While the Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 are more discussed by users, Google TV services and the resulting Chromecast with Google TV hardware are the focus from Google’s official perspective.
Google TV, in effect, integrates video content such as movies, TV shows and live TV (which needs to be viewed by YouTube TV members) into a subscription service that users can view on their own TV, including Disney, france.tv, HBO Max, Netflix, Peacock, Rakuten Viki and Google’s own YouTube.
Of course, with Google Search and Google Voice Assistant, the whole experience will be better.
To complement Google TV, Google also released a hardware called Chromecast With Google TV, which also comes with a remote control.
Specifically, plug Chromecast With Google TV into your TV’s HDMI interface and you’ll be able to use the Google TV features above. The hardware costs $49.99 and is available in three colors: Snow/Sunrise/Sky.
In addition to phones and TVs, Google’s smart speakers have also been updated, this time with Nest Audio.
Nest Audio’s main emphasis is on sound quality, such as the fact that it’s much louder and 50% bass louder than the original Google Home speaker, and can also be tuned by Media EQ and Ambent IQ based on the content itself and the environment.
It also emphasizes intelligence, such as multiple speaker linkages, multi-room control, and, of course, a dedicated machine learning chip (ML Chip) built in to control devices at home.
In terms of price, Nest Audio sells for $99.99.
The launch, despite Google officials deliberately weakening the pixel 5’s sense of presence, remains the most important product of concern for smartphones, the most important category of consumer electronics. This time, the Pixel 5 gives a glimpse of Google’s compromise and reassopers.
In fact, on the Pixel 5, Google has dramatically adjusted its product thinking. In the past, pixel phones have been equipped with a lot of black technology, but the product experience is also very obvious, this year’s Pixel removed the elements of black technology, adding a lot of close to the user experience features, such as large batteries, reverse wireless charging, IP68 and so on.
These can be seen as Google’s advances at the hardware level, but the fading of black tech elements such as Pixel Neural Core makes it somewhat middle-of-the-line.
However, the price of the Pixel 5 is too impressive, a phone with the SnapDragon 765G, set a significantly higher price than the SnapSnapdragon 865 phone, but also confusing at the same time, manymedia commentators think that $500 is the pixel 5 relatively ideal price.
Given the tragic experience of past Pixel phones, it’s not out of the possibility that the Price of the Pixel 5 will plunge.
But one of the real concerns of this launch is whether Google has lost heart of the Pixel product line.
Or will Google want to abandon the Pixel product line?
In this official blog post, Rick Osterloh, senior vice president for all Google hardware, also noted Google’s strong commitment to long-term hardware construction and prides itself on the progress it has made in its product portfolio, despite the challenges ahead in 2020.
That sounds like a bit of “no silver here.”
